Originating in Italy during ancient Roman times, this breed was historically used for guarding duties, protecting livestock, and hunting large game. Today, the Cane Corso continues to excel in guarding and protection roles, while also serving in companionship, police work, and dog shows.
Corsos are highly energetic and intelligent dogs, requiring ample mental stimulation. They are trainable, obedient, and eager to please, yet can show stubbornness. Because of their strong will, they are not ideal for first-time owners. Experienced owners who provide firm leadership and regular training find success with this breed.

Cane Corsos are good with children, though supervision is recommended because of their size. However, their interactions with other pets may require careful management.
This large breed stands between 23.5 to 27.5 inches (59.5 to 70 centimeters) tall and weighs 90 to 110 pounds (41 to 50 kilograms). They have a solid build with a short, dense double coat. Coat colors range from black and gray to fawn, red, and brindle, often with distinctive markings. Grooming needs are low, with brushing required every 5 to 6 days.
The ideal owner for a Corso leads an active lifestyle, enjoys training, and provides firm leadership. This breed thrives in homes with spacious yards and is not well-suited for apartment living. Families with older children in suburban or rural settings are best aligned with the Corso’s needs.
