The Yorkshire Terrier, also known as the Yorkie, is celebrated for its bold personality, silky coat, and small stature. This breed originated in 19th century England, where it was primarily used for ratting and hunting rodents. Today, Yorkies are prized companions, often found in show rings, serving as therapy dogs, and occasionally continuing their ratting legacy.

Yorkies are moderately energetic and highly intelligent, making mental stimulation essential. They show a decent level of trainability, though their independent streak can sometimes lead to stubbornness. Their eagerness to please makes them suitable for first-time owners, who will find them obedient but sometimes challenging without experience.

Known for their bold and affectionate nature, Yorkies are confident and independent. They are good with children, especially older ones, and can adapt well to living with other pets. However, their spirited temperament may require supervision during interactions with other animals.

Yorkies are an extra small breed with a compact build, standing 5.5 to 7 inches tall (14 to 18 cm) and weighing between 6 to 10 pounds (2.5 to 4.5 kg). Their long, silky coat comes in colors like black and tan or a rich golden tan. Grooming is important, with brushing needed every 1 to 2 days to maintain their luxurious appearance.

This breed thrives in both apartments and houses with a fenced yard. Yorkies suit a moderately active owner lifestyle, whether single or family-oriented with older kids. They adapt well to urban living and enjoy companionship, thriving indoors where they feel secure and loved.
