The Papillon, also called the Pap, originates from Belgium, France, and Spain. Known for its butterfly-like ears and lively personality, this breed emerged in the 16th century as companions and small game hunters. Today, they excel in companionship, dog shows, and agility contests.
Paps require ample physical and mental stimulation because of their high intelligence. They are highly trainable with a strong eagerness to please, making them suitable for first-time owners. Their energy levels and low stubbornness contribute to their obedience and adaptability to various training styles.
Characterized by their energetic and sociable nature, Papillons are friendly and alert. They form excellent bonds with children, enjoying playtime and companionship. While they get along with other pets, supervision is advised to ensure harmony in multi-pet households.
The Papillon is extra small with a petite build, standing between 8 and 11 inches (20.5 to 28 centimeters) tall and weighing 7 to 10 pounds (3 to 4.5 kilograms). Their medium-length, silky coat comes in parti-color with distinctive white blazes and nosebands. Grooming needs are low to moderate, requiring brushing every 4 to 5 days.
Ideal for moderately active owners, Paps thrive in urban settings and adapt well to apartment living. They enjoy indoor life with training and social interactions. A fenced yard is beneficial, although not necessary, provided they receive regular walks and mental challenges.
